Art is for Museums

Art is for Museums

I caught myself pondering a Wordpress Theme change for my site today, what a time suck. There went an unproductive half hour as I trawled the web for ideas, until I snapped out of the time wasting fixation realising I hadn't written my blog post for the day. I can't remember where I heard the saying but it's one I'll always remember, and have used before, "Art is for Museums". I've never been great at design and regularly take fashion advice form my teenage daughter. Most of the sites I am … [Read more...]

Backlinks A How To Guide

backlinking ebook

After my last few posts on SEO I thought there was a piece missing and that was the how to from all of this. The part most have trouble with is gaining backlinks so I thought I would try to do a quick guide to gaining quality back-links for your web site. Search engine positions are largely driven by backlinks. Having a site that is search engine friendly helps and I would suggest that any business give thought to why they shouldn't be using Wordpress. Google will determine the quality of a … [Read more...]

SEO the easy way, a 5 step process

3102556540_ee05871fae_m

I have read so many books, blogs and articles on search engine optimisation tips, tricks, advise and dos & don'ts over the years you start to wonder what to believe. Actually it is quite simple when broken down, there are only a few components to good SEO. Although this is a basic list you can spend much time and go into greater depth on each item. That said there really is no need to and when you have an existing business many of the research and choices you need to make will be driven … [Read more...]

5 Things You Need to Create Something from Nothing

Magician

I've worked in the online arena for over 10 years now and when I look back over that time at all the projects I've worked on, companies I've worked for or with they have all had something in common. The expectation that I can create something from nothing and maybe they are right? Creating something from nothing in a web sense is a bit like alchemy, where you don't really start with nothing but that the "something" you do have is not quite tangible or in the right form. So what do you need to … [Read more...]

Running an online business is a marathon not a sprint

Tsegave Kebede

Watching the London Marathon really inspired me this year. All the money raising stories and reasons for people running brought me out in goose bumps, but it wasn't this that gave me inspiration. It was the winning male athlete Tsegaye Kebede. Tsegaye is from Ethopia, born in 1987 one of 13 children, 4 years ago he was collecting fire wood and earning less than £0.20 ($0.30) per day. He enjoyed running as a youngster but as you can imagine wasn't fortunate enough to benefit from professional … [Read more...]

Website review for Sierra Crossing Images

Sierra Crossing Images produce wildlife and landscape printed aluminium plate. This is a great looking product that is let down by a poorly produced website. If this was a home grown site many of the usability and implementation issues could be forgiven. The fact that this was a commercially built site shows you need to be selective when choosing a company to present your products online. Ensure your developer works to the WCAG 2 guidelines from the W3C, if they can meet even the lowest of … [Read more...]

Website Critique for XTC Paintball

The following video is a basic web site critique I produced for South African based XTC Paintball Their web site offers a fantastic subject matter, paintball guns and associated accessories, and requires only minor adjustments to make the web site more appealing. It does display a great example where many web site owners try to prop up their income unnecessarily using content based ad displays such as Google Adsense. Watch the video and let me know what you … [Read more...]
